Quite the claim. That’s Utah’s official (and trademarked) slogan, but is it true? Well, it does get an incredible average of 1,270cm of snow annually, and that snow is often so light and fluffy it feels like you're floating through air. Add in America’s biggest ski resort, ritziest ski resort and snowiest ski resort and Utah should be on top of everyone’s ski bucket list. The only problem is choosing where to go.
Subscribe now to Peaked.com.au and Mogul Ski World and share in 25 words why you want to go to Utah, and you could win a massive prize from our two partners - AUD$1,500 Mogul Ski World Utah Travel Voucher and AUD$2,000 in Yuki Threads winter gear. Insane prize!

A week isn’t enough at Park City Mountain. You’d have to ski or board your pants off to find and explore every nook and cranny of the resort’s 2,954 hectares and 330 runs. America’s largest ski resort has two bases – Mountain Village and Canyons Village – and the 43 lifts are so spread out it takes a day to get from one end of the resort to the other and back again. Take on the challenge to try as many lifts and runs as you can in one day. The only problem is you might then be too tired for the buzzy après and dining scene on historical Main Street.
As pretty as a Dickens’ Christmas card, Park City’s Wild West feel is best experienced on Main Street, with its clapboard buildings housing art galleries, quirky gift shops and more than a hundred bars and restaurants. Try a shot ski – a ski lined with shot glasses – at No Name Saloon or drop into High West Distillery and Saloon, which is the only ski-in/ski-out distillery in North America.
If you have the need for speed then you can’t get much faster (or crazier) than hurtling down the official Olympic bobsleigh track, where you go from zero to 60mph in a cloud of powder. Park City was home to the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games – and the upcoming 2034 games – and you can get the full Olympic experience at Utah Olympic Park, with its bobsleigh track, six Nordic ski jumps and the 2002 Winter Games museum.
Yeah, you better make it two weeks.
Deer Valley Resort is the Rolls-Royce of ski resorts – it even has complimentary ski storage at the base for clients who aren’t staying at ski-in/ski-out lodging, as well as staff to assist carrying the skis from drop-off to the slopes. Consistently ranked as one of the best ski resorts in America, Deer Valley is just that – a skier-only resort. There are 809 hectares of meticulously groomed trails, high-speed quads everywhere and limits to the number of skiers on busy days. And it’s about to get bigger. A lot bigger. The resort will more than its skiable area across four peaks adding 80 new runs, 16 lifts (including a 10-person gondola) and almost 1,500 hectares of extra terrain to play in. Throw in a new village, restaurants and ski school and it’s like getting a whole new resort.
While Deer Valley Resort is exclusive and a little elitist, that’s part of its charm. You just never know who you might be sitting next to on that chairlift – with everyone wearing helmets and goggles you could be sharing the ride with a celebrity or a mega mogul. Plus, you can ski right past the front door of the grand mansions that line the side of those perfectly pisted ski runs. My guide (Deer Valley Resort has free mountain guided tours in the morning and afternoon) described them as “10/10/10 homes”. They cost $10 million dollars, have 10 bedrooms and the owners stay in them for 10 days a year.
At Deer Valley Resort, you can live it up like a celebrity at a roster of luxury ski-in/ski-out hotels. At the Stein Eriksen Lodge, your skiing lunch stop has a wine collection featuring more than 2,000 selections, while The St. Regis Deer Valley has its own funicular lift and very British butlers to make you an après Earl Grey tea.
Just down the road in Heber Valley, winter is anything but ordinary. Take a guided snowmobile tour through alpine meadows, snowshoe through serene forest trails, or cross-country ski beneath wide-open skies. For something more relaxed, float over the snow-dusted valley in a hot air balloon, soak in the geothermal warmth of the Utah Crater, or wander through the enchanting Ice Castles, where frozen towers and tunnels feel straight out of a fairy tale.
More than just pitch perfect groomers, Deer Valley Resort and its neighbouring Heber Valley has a dedication to delivering an exemplary ski trip that’s unmatched by other resorts.
If you want some of that guaranteed white stuff then Snowbird delivers, with an average annual snowfall of more than 12 metres. (It gets so much snow the slopes sometimes remain open until 4th of July.) Snowbird has it all – serious chutes, nail-biting cliff drops, moguls, trees, long lung-busting groomers, terrain parks and everything in between – making it one of the most diverse and challenging resorts around.
If you’re a powder hound, your chances of hitting the jackpot are pretty good. Snowbird was my first-ever experience of the famed Utah smoky powder and I felt as if I was in a Warren Miller film as my knees disappeared in slow motion into deep snowy wonderfulness.
Snowbird is for hardcore skiers and sliders, but it does also have some fantastic terrain for beginners. Intermediates will have a blast on the cruisers, especially in Gad Valley. And make sure you take a ride through the mountain (literally – there’s a tunnel with a magic carpet) that leads you out to the intermediate and advanced terrain in Mineral Basin.
Best of all is that Snowbird is only a 40-minute drive from Salt Lake City Airport.
The big flaky snowy snowflakes that bless Alta are called “Alta Magic™. Why? Because the snow here has a magical habit of falling consistently. It's also called Goldilocks snow: not too little, not too much, just the perfect amount to be in powder paradise. This is a skier’s mountain – it’s for major-league skiers and snowboarders aren't permitted.
Alta sure does get snow. Two years ago, it got 900 inches. That’s 2,286cm. To put that in perspective, Mt Buller averages 240cm of snow a season. Alta has a gluttony of big mountain skiing, but there are only five lifts. The joke is that Alta stands for “Another Long Traverse Ahead”, but all those traverses lead to big wide-open bowls, empty glades and enough steep terrain to put a permanent smile on your face.
Once you have experienced one of the classic quintessential Alta Magic powder days, you will want to go home, sell your things and move to Utah.
I haven’t skied at Brian Head, but you’d think I would have, seeing as they named it after me. Set among the striking red rocks of Southern Utah, Brian Head packs a surprising punch into a small package. Thanks to its dual-peak layout over Navajo Mountain and Giant Steps Mountain, this resort has 218 skiable hectares and provides an even spread of different levels of terrain. Everyone from families to experts will get the most out of a trip here.
With an annual snowfall average of more than 10 metres, Brian Head often stays open longer than its bigger, better-known neighbours to the north. This same snow also provides spectacular views of the red rock hoodoos sprinkled with snow in the neighbouring national parks.
Bookend your ski trip with a visit to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon to experience the ultimate Utah trilogy.
