I’m sure we are going to lose some diners into the snowy wilderness. We are riding a snowcat up from the base of Big Sky Resort to a heated yurt nestled in the forest on the flanks of Lone Peak. I’m sitting snugly inside the snowcat with a blanket on my lap, while mostly look-how-tough-I-am teens and soon-to-be-frozen-solid teens are perched on the roof.
Our brisk 20-minute ride trundles through a snow-dusted forest to the secluded Montana Dinner Yurt, where a three-course culinary feast awaits. A torch-lit sledding run and a crackling bonfire signal our arrival, while inside we are greeted by candle-lit tables, a crackling wood stove, a guitarist playing country classics and flannel-clad servers. It’s BYOT (Bring Your Own Tipple), but I’m dining alone so I do get a few looks of “Is he going to drink all of that?” as the waiter uncorks my bottle of red wine.
We begin with a hearty baked French onion soup and warm, freshly baked bread followed by a tender filet mignon with peppercorn sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and sautéed veggies.
In between courses you can step outside to warm up by the outdoor firepit and watch the more energetic souls on the sledding hill. Although there seems to be more slipping and screaming than sledding.
The evening concludes with a delightful Toblerone chocolate fondue, served with fruit and pound cake. I am so full, but there is always room for chocolate fondue.
The teens are back atop the snowcat on the journey back down. I bet they were still frozen to their seats the next morning.
